When you look to the sky on a rainy day and see nothing but a dense blanket of low, grey, featureless clouds, you are looking at nimbostratus. They represent the strengthening and thickening of a stratus cloud layer. They are dark in colour and produce steady, prolonged precipitation. These layers cover the sky, producing overcast conditions, and uniformly extend in all directions.Nimbostratus clouds are low-level, rain clouds that form a uniform layer.Nimbostratus clouds, for example, are typically thick, low clouds that form a dense bank and yield steady snow or rain. Nimbus, for example, means “rain-bearing” in Latin and is added to cloud names as a prefix or suffix when they produce precipitation of any kind. The cumulonimbus’s forerunner, cumulus congestus, may also drop rain.Ĭloud types receive names based on their position in the atmosphere, their overall shape, and the weather in which they appear. Rain or “nimbus” clouds may appear as low, sheeted “stratonimbus” producing sprinkles or steady drizzle, or as tall “cumulonimbus” clattering with thunder and flashing with lightning. If the condensed droplets in a cloud get large enough, they’ll fall as precipitation. Clouds are formed through the process of condensation when water vapour, primarily from the oceans, rises into the atmosphere where it cools and condenses into a cloud. ![]()
